Stop the Attack on Democracy: Yoruba Youth Council Defends INEC Chairman

The Yoruba Youth Council has expressed strong opposition to a planned protest targeting Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The protest, organized by the #ReformINEC and #SackYakubu Movement, is set to commence in Abuja on December 5, 2024. The Council described the initiative as divisive, unwarranted, and a distraction from the nation’s ongoing development efforts.

In its statement, the Yoruba Youth Council dismissed the protestors’ claims as unfounded, alleging that the movement is driven by individuals with ulterior motives aimed at destabilizing the nation. The Council highlighted the progress made under Prof Yakubu’s leadership, particularly in strengthening electoral transparency and credibility. It further condemned the attempt to tarnish the reputation of a leader who has earned international recognition for his reforms.

The Council also raised concerns that the protest may be part of a broader effort to undermine the administration of President Nola Ahmed Tinubu, whose policies have focused on national transformation and economic growth. It called on security agencies to be proactive in preventing any actions that could threaten the country’s stability.

The Yoruba Youth Council reaffirmed its support for Prof Yakubu and his efforts to reform Nigeria’s electoral system. It urged citizens to reject attempts to derail progress through unnecessary agitation and emphasized the importance of unity in safeguarding the nation’s peace, stability, and democratic values.
